What You Need to Know About Selling Your Jewelry

1.) Is an appointment necessary?

Appointments are not required, but making one is a good idea so we can give you our full attention. You can also leave your items with us for review, and we’ll give you a receipt and prepare an offer.  Know that all transactions are confidential.

Call: 507-289-0500 or email: Barbara@personaljeweler.com to schedule!

2.) Do you charge a fee?

No, we don’t charge any fee to review your items and make an offer.

3.) How do I prepare for my appointment?

Just gather the items you want us to look at - nothing is too old or unusual! We review things like dental gold crowns, sterling silver hollow or flatware, costume jewelry, broken chains, diamonds and gemstones, and more. We’ve even looked at a jeweled hat-pin collection.

4.) Do I need to bring anything other than what will be evaluated?

a.)  A valid driver's license or photo ID. This is required by the County.

b.)  If you have original paperwork for your jewelry (like appraisals, receipts, or grading reports), it’s helpful to bring that too.

5.) What are my options?

a.) Sell outright: You get immediate payment for your jewelry.

b.) Trade-in: Get 25% extra in-store credit when you trade in your gold jewelry.  This credit can be used for things like new or estate jewelry, custom design, repairs, and more.

c.) Consignment: Your jewelry is shown in-store and online. If it sells, you get paid within 30 days. This option gives you more money, but it’s not guaranteed to sell.  Additional details are discussed during our no-fee consultation.

d.) Broker: Let us help you sell your item(s) to our network of estate buyers and dealers.  You get paid within 10 business days after the sale.  The broker fee varies with the complexity of the item(s) and value, which is discussed during our no-fee consultation.

6.) Do I have to accept your offer?

No! You don’t have to accept the offer for the items we have reviewed if you don’t want to.

7.) What if I don’t like the offer?

We do not guarantee an offer, but we will gladly review your items and make alternative suggestions for things we cannot buy.  Many people find redesigning or trading in their jewelry to be an excellent use of that resource. Often, heirloom or sentimental jewelry can be redesigned to reflect your personal taste.

8.) Why is my offer lower than what it was appraised for?

a.) Insurance appraisals are written to replace your jewelry item with a new one in a retail jewelry store, which costs more than used items.

b.) The market can change. For example, lab-created diamonds have lowered the price of natural diamonds, whose value is partially based on rarity, by flooding the market.  At the same time, lab-created diamonds have lost value on an average of 70%, which is why they are flooding the market because of their lack of rarity.

c.)  Even if your item looks brand new, it’s still worth less as a used piece than when it was new. It’s like how a car loses value once it’s driven off the car lot.  That being said, natural diamonds and timeless, well-made gold and platinum jewelry will hold their value, which can increase over time.

d.) Selling directly to someone else might get you more money, but selling to a jeweler is safer and easier.
